My artwork comes from a desire to understand and relay the ideas and pre-conceived ideas that surround personal presentation and persona within and around social areas, the human desire to fit in and conform. Using my work, I highlight the issue of the true self and personal expectation. My work heavily involves the theory of Ethnomethodology, a study of how social order is produced through social interaction and also explores the realm of human behaviour in social situations and the way that we appear to others. Each person in everyday social intercourse presenting themselves and their activity to others, attempting to guide and control the impressions that others form, like an actor on stage. I create plaster faces inspired by traditional folk masks to display the personas and surface emotions worn by individuals in everyday life.
